Design Technology

Basically following design technologies used when designing Honda Vezel Hybrid vehicles

1) Internal Combustion Engine (1.5L LEB Atkinson cycle i-DCD l4)

Engine used here is having the Honda's DOHC i-VTEC (Dual Overhead Camshaft intelligent-VTEC) technology       and it's capacity is 1.5L. i-VETC is a new technology which is a combination of Honda's VTEC and VTC                    (Variable Timing Control) technologies. Also this engine use Direct Injection technology.

This engine, optimized to the SPORT HYBRID i-DCD, switching between normal and Atkinson cycle                        corresponding to the situation.

Fuel efficiency and power coexist at a high-dimension through a high expansion ratio and minimized friction          loss, thanks to Honda's advanced technologies including VTEC.

Power of the Engine is  97 kW (130 hp) and torque is 156 N⋅m (115 lb⋅ft)

This engine is designed to achieve Efficiency and Performance both together.

Honda's original VTEC + VTC realizes Atkinson cycle with excellent thermal efficiency. By using two types of cams properly, both fuel-efficient operation and high-output operation are achieved, and the phase of the intake valve is continuously controlled by the electrified VTC (Valve Timing Control) to further improve the effect.

2) Electric Motor (Honda H1 AC PMSM)

In here PMSM stands for permanent-magnet synchronous motor. PMSM uses permanent magnets embedded       in the steel rotor to create a constant magnetic field. The stator carries windings connected to an AC supply to       produce a rotating magnetic field (as in an asynchronous motor). At synchronous speed the rotor poles lock to       the rotating magnetic field. Permanent magnet synchronous motors are similar to brushless DC motors.                   Neodymium magnets are the most commonly used magnets in these motors.

In Honda Vezel Hybrid, Power of the Electric motor is 22 kW (30 hp) and Torque is 160 N⋅m (118 lb⋅ft).

Also in Vezel Hybrid vehicles, this electric motor sometimes also works as an electricity generator and charge        the hybrid battery.

3) Transmission (7-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission)

This 7-gear DCT is equipped with the motor. The dual clutch enables connection and disconnection          between the engine and motor. as well as realizes weight reduction and compactification.

The SPORT HYBRID i-DCD has a two-axis configuration in which odd-numbered shafts and even-numbered           shafts are lined up in parallel, and the overall length is shortened by adopting a planetary gear for the first             speed. The motor has been made compact while increasing output, and can be built into the transmission             case.

Transmission system used here is Honda's intelligent- Dual Clutch Drive which is a 7-speed transmission                system. With this technology, Vezel will provide sporty drive with any loss of delay.

The i-DCD realizes an exhilarating driving experience every time the accelerator is pushed deep, by combining a powerful 1.5L i-VTEC engine utilizing Honda's unique VTEC technology, with a compact, high-torque motor, and a Lithium-ion battery which can provide the motor with a high current instantly. The Hybrid Drive mode provides strong acceleration by combining motor power with engine power through the dual clutch transmission.

4) Hybrid Battery (Lithium-Ion)

Battery performance is improved through Honda's advanced technologies and proven track record of producing and evolving hybrid cars. Honda's batteries can store more electricity, and use and charge electricity with minimum loss. The package is more compact, even though 1.5 times more electricity can be stored than before.   Honda Vezel use High power Lithium-Ion battery which has 8-Years of warranty.

  • PCU - Power Control Unit

An intelligent device that freely controls current and voltage

  • IPU with built-in lithium-ion battery

Electricity that regenerates deceleration energy and electricity generated by the power of the engine are               stored and supplied to the motor. It has a high output density, is lightweight and compact, and emits high               output. It also has excellent efficiency of "storing and discharging electric power" and greatly contributes                 to fuel efficiency and driving

5) Hybrid drivetrain (SPORT Hybrid i-DCD)

Honda's Sport Hybrid i-DCD is Compact, Highly Efficient System Realizes Low Fuel Consumption and Driving Pleasure.

Honda has been working on the evolution of a one-motor hybrid system that is optimal for the compact class so that more customers can ride hybrid vehicles with excellent fuel efficiency. Among them, Honda pursued a system that can utilize the engine and motor most efficiently according to the situation. Honda Has completed the SPORT HYBRID i-DCD, which achieves class-leading fuel efficiency, powerful acceleration that surpasses conventional models, and a rhythmic and stretchy feeling of acceleration.

The SPORT HYBRID i-DCD inherits the light weight and compactness of the conventional hybrid system, while achieving excellent fuel efficiency and powerful acceleration. Honda says that combination of 1.5L engine with high power electric motor can perform as a 1.8L engine. The Vezel hybrid version fuel economy is 27.0 km/l (76.3 mpg‑imp; 63.5 mpg‑US) (3.7 L/100 km) in the Japanese JC08 cycle.

Sport Hybrid i-DCD system will automatically switch between fuel efficient/smooth driving EV mode, and powerful / exciting driving Hybrid Drive mode depending on how the accelerator is depressed.

12) Advanced functions provide smart driving assistance

  • The Electric Parking Brake, which can be put on with an easy pull of the switch and released when the driver steps on the accelerator pedal, is featured as standard equipment on all types.
  • The Automatic Brake Hold function is featured as standard equipment on all types. When the driver activates the system by pressing a switch while stopping for a traffic light or traffic congestion, the system automatically holds the vehicle in position without the driver stepping on the brake, and the system automatically releases the brake when the driver steps on the accelerator pedal.
  • The Reactive Force Pedal assists fuel-efficient driving through control of the reaction force of the accelerator, and is standard equipment on all hybrid models. The system applies reactive force on the accelerator pedal when the driver steps on it excessively. The relative force also is applied when driving on slippery surfaces such as icy roads.

13) The fun of driving and a high quality feel were fused together         for driving performance which is built on the sense of                       security

  • For hybrid models, direct-injection technology was adopted for the 1.5 L engine of the SPORT HYBRID i-DCD, the lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system which can power the vehicle through EV driving alone. This realized maximum system output of 112 KW (152 PS)* that is equivalent to that of a 2.0 L engine. The fuel economy of 27.0 km/L (JC08mode), the highest fuel economy among all SUV models sold in Japan was realized through intelligent use of three different driving modes depending on the driving situation. Moreover, the paddle shifter, which enables the driver to enjoy high output of a direct-injection engine and the direct feel of DCT, is featured as standard equipment on all hybrid models.
  • Gasoline models are equipped with a 1.5 L direct-injection engine and realize powerful driving and excellent fuel economy of 20.6 km/L** (JC08 mode).
  • Adoption of high-performance sound absorbing and insulating materials, which are typically used for high-end sedan models, realizes outstanding quietness.
  • Adoption of the Amplitude Reactive Dampers, which demonstrate optimal damping characteristics in accordance with driving scenes, enhances occupant comfort and driving stability at a high level.
  • An inner-frame structure and super high tensile material (high-tensile sheet steel) are adopted to approximately 20% of the overall body frame, realizing a lightweight and highly-rigid body that generates linear driving.

*Maximum output of the hybrid system consists of the engine and motor. Measured internally by Honda

**G (FWD) and X tested by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism

14) Real Time AWD, which realizes both the ability to cover                     various ground and excellent fuel economy, is also adopted             for a hybrid model (first time for Honda hybrid models)

  • The Real Time AWD, which electronically, precisely and quickly controls the driving force of the rear wheels, is available for selected types of both hybrid and gasoline models.
  • Based on the information collected through multiple sensors, the ECU accurately detects the driving situation and determines the amount of torque necessary for the front and rear wheels. The system instantaneously distributes an appropriate amount of torque for the rear wheels and smoothly shifts to 4WD.
  • The VEZEL exclusive setting, that distributes more torque to the rear wheels during cornering, enhances the exhilarating feeling.

15) Incorporating advanced safety performance

  • Outstanding passive safety is realized through the adoption of the next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body and the Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Body. The ACE body applies Honda's original G-Force Control Technology (G-CON) to enhance self-protection and make it less aggressive to other vehicles in the event of a collision. The Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Body structure also absorbs the impact of a collision in the front part of the body, which is at the highest risk of causing a pedestrian injury in the event of a collision.
  • Offering a range of enhanced safety features, the City-Brake Active System is available on selected models. The City-Brake Active System supports safe driving and mitigates accidental damage from a collision or when the vehicle starts moving forward. The system is accompanied by a side curtain airbag system and a front seat i-side airbag system (variable capacity type). In addition to that newer models of Honda vezels supports Honda sensing safety features.

16) Electric Servo Brake System

This system has wide regeneration range and regenerates electricity more efficiently compared to the hydraulic                      booster system.

17) Electric compressor for air-conditioner

Even during idle reduction or EV driving, air-conditioner can be turned on and it ensures the comfort as well as reduces the engine load which contributes to the fuel efficiency.

Different Driving Modes of Sport Hybrid i-DCD

Honda Vezel has Electric motor/Generator and an Engine. Depending on the situation, this Electric motor/ Generator can work as an Electric motor which consumes power and drive wheels or can work as a electricity generator which used to charge the hybrid battery. Vezel Hybrid has 4 different drive modes, depending on how the Efficiency and Power will be managed.

1) EV (Electric Vehicle) Drive Mode

Vehicles driven by electric motor only. Which is powered by hybrid battery. In areas where motor is good at,          such as departures and cruises in cities, the clutch disengages the engine for efficient EV driving.

2) Engine Running Drive Mode

In this case vehicle driven by internal Combustion Engine (ICE) only. In the cases such as high-speed cruises          where the engine can be driven efficiently, the driving force of the engine alone is used. Depending on the            situation, the surplus output will be used to generate electricity.

3) Hybrid Drive Mode

In this mode vehicle driven by the combination of both electric motor and engine. When accelerating, which          requires a large driving force, the clutch is engaged and the driving force of both the motor and the engine is        used to drive powerfully.

4) Regeneration Mode

When the accelerator pedal is released during cruising, the motor efficiently regenerates deceleration energy      and charge the hybrid battery. When you step on the brake, it will be thoroughly regenerated by making use          of the electric servo brake support.

Vehicle Driving Modes of Vezel Hybrid

There are mainly 3 driving modes available in Vezel.

1) Normal Mode

  • Normal - Auto gear shift
  • Normal - Manual gear shift (Temporary) (Using pedal shifters)

2) Sport Mode

  • Sport - Auto gear shift
  • Sport - Manual gear shift (Using pedal shifters)

3) ECON Mode

Let's discuss about each..

1) NORMAL Mode

In a Normal Mode, your vehicle will shift at the most optimal point for fuel efficiency and acceleration.
For that, following settings will apply for the vehicle.

1) Lighten steering for easier manoeuvres
2) Compliant throttle response
3) Softens dampers for a smooth ride

Note :-Since in the NORMAL mode, ECON mode is OFF, the increase in reaction force of the reactive force pedal is small (Reaction force can be customized using the settings menu).

How to switch on NORMAL mode?

This is the default mode of the vehicle when you power ON the vehicle. If this mode is activated, SPORT indicator and the ECON indicator (Below the speedometer) of the meter board will not lit.

2) SPORT Mode

Sporty shift logic which disengages EV mode.

When the SPORT mode is turned on, the driving force for accelerator operation is controlled to be greater, resulting in a sportier driving centered on the engine. The lighting color of the meter also switches to red.

Selecting the SPORT mode will do 4 different changes in vehicle. They are,

1) It changes the shift points (Increase the throttle response)

Automatic car shift the gears at certain points automatically. In a normal mode, your car will shift at the most           optimal point for fuel efficiency and acceleration. However, when you put it into sport mode, then the car will         shift at a higher RPM, or all the way at redline, for better acceleration and speed when you press the gas pedal.

2) It tightens up the steering

With electric power steering, the steering feel is able to be changed on the fly, and sport mode usually toggles      it on. Sport mode will add more resistance to the steering feel to give it a sportier, and more weighted, feeling        like a race car.

3) Sharper handling (Stiffens the dampers for a sporty drive)

"Ride Comfort" and "Handling" present conflicting requirements on damping properties of a suspension system. While ride comfort demands a softer damping, a higher damping force makes the ride handling better. Conventional dampers, being solely velocity dependent, are always a compromise between these two requirements. A damper can be made position sensitive, in addition to its velocity dependence, in order to obtain the best of both the worlds. A position-sensitive damper can have a softer damping force for low amplitude road excitations, as observed on highways and a higher damping force for higher amplitude road excitations, as observed in off-road conditions. Thus such a damper can be optimized not only for a good comfort, but for a good handling performance also. General designs for a position sensitive damper involve a bypass arrangement around the piston. It is possible to achieve more performance-based suspension system without compromising the comfort by using performance dampers.

Sport mode will adjust the dampening levels in the vehicle's shock absorbers to tighten up the ride for less body roll and a sportier feel.

4) When the SPORT Mode is ON, reactive force pedal system will not operate

SPORT mode, typically promises increased power and response once activated, giving the driver a more thrilling ride. If someone lives in an area with well-paved and winding roads, this is where you'll want to activate that 'Sport' button.

Downside of the SPORT Mode:

It's important to point out that using sport mode on almost any vehicle will lead to a slight drop in fuel economy. This tracks logically since the engine will be working a little harder than normal.

You may find that when you actuate sport mode the car feels better when you want to blast up an on-ramp, or drive a twisty mountain road, but feels worse if you are trundling along in rush hour traffic. The drone of the engine, louder exhaust note, and the stronger engine braking due to the higher RPM settings are the opposite of what works best in traffic. Which is why there is always an easy way to turn sport mode on and off. It is not intended to be used in all situations.

How to switch on SPORT Mode?

1) Press the SPORT button in the center console to activate the SPORT mode while the power mode is in ON            mode

2) SPORT will indicate in the bottom left corner of the meter board

Note :- If SPORT mode is turned ON while ECON mode is ON, driving control gives priority to SPORT mode.

3) ECON Mode

ECON Mode is feature that will help you maximize efficiency. ECON Mode will adjust various performance elements of your vehicle to prioritize fuel economy.

When the ECON mode is activated, the operation of the engine, transmission, motor, and air-conditioner is controlled to facilitate fuel-efficient driving.

Throttle Response -  Econ Mode leaves your low and high-level throttle responses unaffected, impacting only your vehicle's mid-range behavior- so you'll only really notice a difference when you're first attempting to accelerate on the highway from your cruising speed. The gas pedal will feel dampened when you press down on it and the throttle will open slower, thereby letting less air and fuel into the engine and making it more fuel-efficient. When ECON mode is activated "Reactive force pedal" will also starts to operate. "Reactive force pedal" that uses the accelerator pedal to notify you of fuel-efficient driving in order to support more eco-friendly driving in daily driving. Excessive depression of the accelerator is reduced through the reaction force of the pedal. Furthermore, even on slippery roads such as snowy roads, excessive stepping is prevented through reaction force.

When the ECON mode is OFF, the increase in reaction force of the reactive force pedal is small (Reaction force can be customized using the settings menu).

Transmission Shift Points - To further maximize fuel economy, ECON Mode will adjust transmission shift points to shift at lower RPMs and prioritize fuel consumption over performance. Frequent up-and-down shifts can be significant drains on your fuel economy, but when you enter Econ Mode your transmission will guard against this possibility by altering its shift points. When you're traveling in a hilly environment with cruise control activated, Econ Mode will limit unnecessary downshifts, even at the cost of speed.

Cruise Control - When you switch to ECON Mode with cruise control on, expect your Honda to downshift less frequently to improve your L/100 km rating.

Climate Control - When in ECON Mode, your Honda will adjust climate controls and air compressor settings to operate more efficiently and prioritize fuel economy. Econ Mode limits the activity of your A/C system. Your car won't cool down quickly on the hottest days, but you'll save money with better fuel in the long run. ECON Mode Supports fuel efficiency by extending the energy saving mode of the air conditioner and idling stop time. In ECON mode, the air-conditioner may become less effective while driving.

  • ECO Assist

This system is put in place to provide you with visual indicators on how your driving patterns will impact fuel economy. All types are equipped as standard with "Eco Assist", which conveys fuel-efficient driving to the driver in a fun way and assists in eco-driving. This includes,

1. Ambient meter

2. Ecological drive display

3. ECO Score

4. Power Flow Monitor

1. Coaching Function- Ambient meter

The more eco-friendly you drive, the more the meter colour changes from white to green

2. Ecological (ECO) Drive Display

The icon moves up and down in conjunction with the accelerator and brake. It is fuel efficient if you stay in the center of the circle

3. Teaching Function - ECO Score

Your driving "Score" is shown as leaves, which accumulate or diminish based on your driving style and its impact on fuel economy. When you turn the vehicle off, your driving cycle and life time score are displayed. The eco-driving degree of the day and the progress up to that day are displayed by the number of leaves.

4. Power Flow Monitor (Energy Flow monitor)

As explained above, this monitors engine and electric motor power flow and whether the system is assisting          the engine or charging the battery.

How to switch on ECON mode?

1) While the power mode is in ON mode, press the ECON switch at the right hand side of the dashboard to activate or de-activate the ECON mode.

2) If the ECON mode activated, "ECON ON" will display on the MID and the indicator light in the meter board lights up as above.

Note :- If SPORT mode is turned ON while ECON mode is ON, driving control gives priority to SPORT mode.

When not to use ECON mode

Knowing when to press the Honda Econ Button is the key to maximizing your efficiency without compromising your vehicle's performance. If you find yourself in any of the situations below it is best to leave Econ Mode turned off until the situation changes.

  • Entering the Highway: Being that Econ Mode can reduce throttle response and limit downshifting, it is best not to use this mode so your Honda model can utilize its full power in order to get up to the necessary speed.
  • Overtaking: Much like when entering the highway, when overtaking another vehicle it is best to be able to utilize the full power of the engine if needed.
  • Hilly/Steep Conditions: Whether you find yourself traversing up one steep hill or you find yourself in a very hilly region, it is best not to use the Honda Econ Mode. Being that this mode limits power and keeps the transmission from downshifting as needed, you may find that your vehicle actually loses speed and consumes more fuel on inclines with the mode on compared to off.
  • Towing: When towing anything behind your Honda, you want to be able to utilize all of the power and performance from the engine and transmission if needed. Econ Mode can reduce power and responsiveness in favor of fuel efficiency but in this instance, you could end up using more fuel and make your vehicle work harder with it activated.
  • Hot Days: Being that Econ Mode lessens the performance of your air conditioning system in favor of better fuel economy, it is best to not activate it on very hot days. This can lead to hotter temperatures inside the vehicle, and it may also cause your A/C system to work harder than needed, which can potentially reduce fuel economy.

When to use ECON mode

Being that you already reviewed when NOT to use Honda Econ Mode, we can keep this part short and sweet.

  • Cruising at a steady pace on the highway
  • Normal city driving conditions
  • Areas where the terrain remains relatively flat
  • You aren't towing anything
  • On days that aren't unbearably hot and you won't need to use max A/C for long

4) 7-Speed manual mode (Pedal shift modes)

What is 7-speed manual mode?

The shift switch on the steering wheel allows you to manually shift from 1st to 7th gear without taking your hands off the steering wheel. If you pull the shift switch while driving, it will switch to 7-speed manual shift mode. Also use it when you need an engine braking.
  • When the shift position is 'D' and the SPORT mode is OFF

This is convenient when you want to decelerate temporarily, such as before a curve, when going down a steep hill or when you require more power to climb uphill.

When driving at a constant speed, the 7-speed manual shift mode is automatically cancelled and the shift indicator turns off. You can also release it by pulling the (+) shift switch (on the right side) of the steering wheel for a few seconds.
If you switch to 7-speed manual shift mode during EV driving, the engine will start automatically and the engine will run while the mode is operating.

When you pull the shift switch, the 7-speed manual shift mode is temporarily set and the shift indicator lights up.

  • When the shift position is 'D' and the SPORT mode switch is ON
To cancel the mode, press the SPORT mode switch or press and hold the (+) shift switch (on the right) for a few seconds.

When the shift switch is pulled, the 7-speed manual shift mode is set, and the 'M' indicator and shift indicator light up.

Limitations of 7- Speed manual mode

If you pull the shift switch in the following driving conditions, the indicator will blink without shifting.
  • When the engine speed after operation is out of the allowable range
  • Also, depending on the vehicle condition, it may not be possible to shift gears.
  • When the vehicle speed is out of the permissible range of each gear.

It may automatically shift up or down to protect the engine or transmission. At this time, the corresponding indicator lights up.

In the following cases, the 7-speed manual shift mode may be automatically cancelled.

  • When the transmission protection is needed
  • When the high voltage battery is low
  • When the tire locks on a slippery road surface while the mode is operating
